There was a Walgreens Drugstore in Flint that was having a beauty contest. A make-up company sponsored it. And there was nice girl there who really wanted to win. So, David Light, (a neighbor friend) and myself, decided to help her. She said she would give us a ride in her new Buick convertible (one of the prizes) if she won. All we had to do was write her name on some contest blanks and put them into a box at Walgreens. Whomever got the most votes would win. We took handfuls of these blanks home and wrote her name on them and put them into the box at Walgreens. Well, she won the contest, got her Buick and a "Hollywood screen test." But, she never gave us a ride in her Buick, like she said she would.

Later she starred in a film titled, "Jason and the Argonauts," and one day would co-star with Elvis Presley in "Frankie and Johnny." Her name is Nancy Kovack. She is now married to Zubin Mehta, the former Philharmonic Orchestra leader. I often wonder where she would be today, if she hadn't won that contest?

I did get to talk with her on the phone, after I started publishing the Hollywood Star newspaper. I had mentioned this story in it and she heard about it and phoned to invite me to dinner with her and Zubin. I declined. It would have been too high brow for me.
